![]() She's given little to no verbal characterisation, no-one ever says "Well Gee Nurse Ratched is such a bitch 'cos her dad was killed by a disabled person." or some expository shit like that, it's all left for the viewer to imagine and deduce what conspired before the movie begins and try and see if they can figure out just why Nurse Ratched is so heartless - and it works amazingly well. For a really great example of this, watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, my favourite film of all time, and examine the character of Nurse Ratched. ![]() The best policy for character development is to show, rather than tell us the little things that make the character who they are - this helps because you're allowing the audience to work things out for themselves, instead of treating them like a complete moron by explaining that "THEES EES CLAUDE END EE LIKES TO POP BOOBLE WRAP". ![]() First of all, telling the audience straight up what people like and dislike is not good storytelling. I know I'm very much in the minority, but I hated Amélie, for several reasons. There you have it some ideas to get you started in creating your very own Amélie-inspired outfits! Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed this post, as well as if there are any other films or stars that I should feature in a future “Get the Look” post.SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE, READ THE WHOLE COMMENT BEFORE DOWNVOTING. This is one of the pieces that really demonstrates how much overlap there can be between the costumes of Amélie and today’s aesthetics! Plaid Trousers This dingy sort of plaid is worn by several characters in Amélie, so we’re lucky that the pattern is in style right now. ![]() They just fit in so well with the quirky, adventurous spirit of the film!ĥ. Jelly Sandals I don’t know why, but when I think of Amélie-inspired outfits, I always want to include jelly shoes. “Hey There” Tote Bag This tote would be the perfect way to carry produce if you decide to take your own trip to the grocer’s! The forest green color gives a nod to the film’s iconic color palette, and I view the friendly slogan as a reference to Amélie’s openness to adventure!Ĥ. This simple strawberry tee is a great piece to have if you want to dress like Amélie in 2020, as it’s an easy way to channel her style without having to always wear dresses!ģ. Strawberry T-Shirt Amélie is often seen at the grocer’s or in her family’s garden. Their clothing is often monochromatic, and red is a prominent color throughout the film. Red Slip Dress The characters of Amélie wear simple clothing in bold colors. In fact, they translate very well to the thrifted look that’s so common today.Īllow me to demonstrate how easily the style in Amélie can be replicated, even twenty years later! I’ve rounded up five items from around the internet so that you can get Amélie’s look…ġ. Despite being set in the early 2000’s (an era of fashion that I despise), the costumes in Amélie don’t seem at all outdated. Usually when I picture red and green together, I think of Christmas, but Amélie has convinced me that this combo might actually be kind of chic. My favorite thing about this film (besides the setting, Montmartre!) is the quirky red and green color palette. Released in 2001, Amélie already feels like a classic. The film follows Amélie Poulain, a young woman who moves to Paris to follow her dreams and decides to attempt each day to make the world a little better for her neighbors. When I’m seeking fashion inspiration, one of my favorite films to turn to is Amélie, a whimsical French film starring Audrey Tautou.
